Young People's Symphonic Orchestra


Established almost 40 years ago, the YPSO is the most advanced of the School's ensembles, performing a wide range of orchestral literature in its original form. This full orchestra focuses members' attention on the refinement of ensemble skills, intonation, sight-reading, and orchestral discipline, while increasing performance standards (transposition for some instruments). Past repertoire includes:  Beethoven Symphony No. 5, Bizet Symphony No. 1, and movements from Copland's Rodeo

Instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, English Horn, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion, Harp
Ages: students through high school
AUDITION SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Wednesday, August 12th by 10:00 p.m

Upon receipt of the CMS Application, staff will send more information about audition dates and requirements

Audition Requirements:


  • Major Scales: C,G, D, A, F, B-flat, E-flat, A-flat;  Melodic minor scales: a, e, b, f-sharp, d, g, c, f
  • Violin/Viola/Cello:  Play all scales 3 octaves, 3 notes per bow, without music
  • Double Bass:  Play all scales 2 octaves, 3 notes per bow, without music
  • Winds/Brass/Percussion:  Play all scales including chromatic, minimum 2 octaves/range of the instrument, following the rhythm pattern for Missouri All-State auditions.(
  • Conductor will include the selected scale with the excerpt

An unaccompanied solo of the student's choice that best demonstrates his/her ability.

Excerpts assigned by the the conductor (available online Friday, July 24 after 3pm.  Link will be emailed to all applicants.)

Fees:  $540 ($270 per semester: due November 1 and February 1)

  • $30 non-refundable registration fee assessed once per academic year per student upon enrollment.
  • Upon acceptance, fall tuition is billed in October.  Limited tuition assistance is available.

Weekly Rehearsals:

Mondays from 4:15-6:15 p.m. beginning September 21, 2020
CMS Center, 535 Garden Ave.

Students will be required to wear masks and submit an online Webster University health consent for each in-person rehearsal. All entrances and exits will be separated and clearly marked to ensure proper distancing. Seating will be at a 6’ distance between each student.  In the event of closure due to Covid-19, rehearsals will continue online.

*If audiences are limited for performances, concerts will be live-streamed as well as recorded and distributed to families online.

Patrick JacksonB.M.E., Jackson State University; Master of Music, Double Bass performance, St. Louis Conservatory of Music. Recipient, Missouri American String Teachers Association's "Secondary String Educator of the Year" award, Who's Who Among America's High School Teachers, 2003-04 Kirkwood School District Teacher of the Year, 2003 Emerson "Excellence in Teaching" award, and St. Louis American "Excellence in Education " honors.  Member of the MSHSAA Music Advisory Committee, American String Teachers Association, M.M.E.A., M.E.N.C and past Vice-President of High School Orchestra for the St. Louis All-Suburban Music Educators Association.  Named a 2011 Distinguished Music Educator of the Yale School of Music.
